do churches pass around collection plates anymore?

I am familiar with many of the catholic churches nowadays using baskets with handles, but do the orthodox, and protestant denominations do this yet. Since today i was at a very strange church in ohio that passes around baskets, but the space between the wall and the pew were so small, that baskets were the only way.
