Mouse Pad

If the mouse pad on a Laptop is bad and a usb mouse also acts up, does this indicate a software or hardware problem? I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro. sometimes when I touch the mouse pad, the cursor runs all over the place, highlights areas, and opens windows. When I plug in a mouse, it also acts irrationally. Seems to me if the pad was mechanically malfunctioning, the mouse might be OK. Since both are haywire, does that indicate a software issue? If so, how do I fix it? Reinstall Toshiba mouse and pad drivers?

Your USB mouse is probably working properly, clean up your mouse pad, it's acting erratically because there's pressure on some parts of your mousepad that you aren't initiating. This is also the reason why you can't use a USB mouse properly because your touchpad is still active. Either clean up your touchpad or disable it in the BIOS and use your USB mouse.
